After hanging out at Crookeds’ I noticed that I now have a gag reflex reaction to the word “Rawlsian”.
That is not fair

Well my first thought was, this guy can’t be anything because I never heard of him. Yea I was right.
Typical charlatan behavior taking a concept like liberty and obfuscating it beyond recognititon to fit into his framework about “the way things should be”.
Modern liberal thought will never get a seat at the table of my thought until someone can come up with something that isn’t based in their utopian fantasies about humanity.
His trying to lump in equality with liberty reeks of a pinko sonofabitch. In his perfect society the State is given from the start the sword of despots along with the tree of liberty. It’s pretty plain to see that it wouldn’t take to long for people to start acting like the pigs in Animal Farm.
in other words, they’re deconstructionists, which makes me gag too.
Au cuntraire. Better hashing out a bit of Rawls’ “rational egalitarianism” than the usual marxo-freudian chitchat. Rawlsian hypotheticals are no more problematic than any social contract theory: for that matter, Marx hisself had plowed through Hobbes Leviathan a few times.
Rawls may have been a bit optimistic–he doesn’t really address rationality in much depth—but compared to the history of applied Hegelianism (read some bon mots on say Beria) he doesn’t seem that sinister.
