To love oneself is the beginning of a life-long romance

…read a piece in the Guardian written by some Clinton-era functionary. Typical American exceptionalism, but now with an asterisk for the Bush years. America is God’s gift to the world, sadly fallen from grace for the last eight years, and now ready to ascent back to its full glory.

“Inspired by American leadership…”
“…new ideas about free markets, entrepreneurship, and democracy…”
“The US military’s protective umbrella…”
“…the world is not prepared for a post-American era…”
“America remains the world’s most critical champion of the progressive values that have lifted hundreds of millions of people out of abject poverty and political repression.”

Hey, isn’t it people like Jiang Zemin and Mikhail Gorbachev who lifted hundreds of millions of people out of abject poverty and political repression? What were their values?

Seriously, why do they publish this crap, the exact equivalent of a Pravda editorial from Brezhnev’s period? I mean, this is not the Washington Times, it’s a British newspaper, and supposedly representing the center-left spectrum. Weird.
